Name: Michal Brutvan
Role/title: Head of Development
Team: Product development
What kind of background do you have and how and why did this lead to you joining Midaxo?
I guess it started when I was 10 and got my first computer. I started programming pretty soon and my first "real" application that I developed was a character generator for AD&D. So I did not spend the whole day by the computer but I spent some time with my friends in a garage or an underground cellar playing AD&D too.
I somehow leaned to developing small tools to fix people's small problems and I became a UI developer right after the university. As my career progressed, I became more and more interested in how and why software is being developed, and how users actually used it. This was around the time when the company I worked with started noticing there was something like Agile and that was when I realized that the product owner role was the right one for me - between business and the engineering team, figuring out how to solve the users' problems and make their lives easier, talking to both customers and developers, and finding the right way to develop new features. The experience I got then led me to Midaxo where I could apply what I had learned and see the benefits almost instantly.
What is our regular workday like at Midaxo?
It depends on what my team needs and what phase of a release we are in. But it starts with a coffee or two, haha. I check our JIRA boards to see if there is any update needed, talk with the team to see if there is anything blocking them or causing any issues, review the stuff that is waiting for me. Sometimes I meet with some of our customers to run a demo or a research interview and get their feedback, work with our designer to design new features, or update the documentation on how our features are expected to behave. I also try to meet with most of my team members on a regular basis to listen to what they need and see how I can help them feeling better working here.
What do you get excited about in your work?
I am always excited when we make a progress on a feature and I can present it to our customers or sales and support to get their feedback. I also like a lot when my team comes up with ideas on improvements in our processes and when there are visible results as we actually implement those. Solving real problems makes me happy and over the time I learned that the toughest nuts to crack are not in the code but in all the things around it.
What makes Midaxo different than the rest?
I think the best thing we have is a product that actually helps our customers saving time and money by helping them organize their work. There are many companies that have great products that are fun to use, but delivering a real value to real businesses is quite difficult
There is also another thing that we strive to improve, and we actually do improve. This is something that differentiates us from many other companies where the "improvement" is just a word discussed in management meetings. We regularly run experiments to see how different approaches help us delivering better, faster, and with higher quality. We succeed or fail as a team, and we try to learn from it.
How would you describe your co-workers and the Midaxo culture?
People at Midaxo are friendly, helping, really nice to work with. We value honesty and openness in communication. We talk about issues we have, we fix them without pointing fingers at each other, and we treat everyone equally.
What would you like to say to someone who might consider applying to Midaxo?
If you are running away from challenges or looking for something easy to do, Midaxo is probably not the right place for you. If, however, you have the willpower to continually learn as well as challenge and develop yourself, Midaxo can offer you the perfect environment for that! Here we work hard but not alone; we work as a team and support each other along the way.
